ROBUKI WAVE

ROBUKI WAVE

Robuki Wave is a concept that was born in the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis. It was created to enable shakuhachi players around the world to connect and express their concern about an urgent issue. The idea is for shakuhachi players to play RO, which is the lowest note on the shakuhachi with all finger holes closed (the pitch can vary according to the length of the shakuhachi – it is never-the-less called ro).playing this lowest note is called robuki (ro + buki, which means to blow). We found ROBUKI to be very suited for an exercise with the goal of uniting and connecting players as everybody including beginners can play this one note. This is an inclusive exercise and one does not need to be an experienced shakuhachi player in order to participate. We called it a WAVE because we suggested a time where people could play in their own local time. Until then we had several times tried to play at one particular time but this was always a problem due to time differences. If people play at a specific time in their own local time zone, the robuki will go around the globe as a wave. Therefore we called it ROBUKI WAVE.
